You stand at the rim of the abyss, gazing out over … nothing. Your fear mounts as you are compelled to move closer, to look deeper into the darkness. Your mind races as the many possible outcomes of your next step are considered. Your foot wavers above the abyss, and then —
— you are falling, lost in the misty realm of your dreams. You see nothing clearly, yet it is frighteningly familiar. You feel terror swell in your throat, but force it back down. It's only a dream, you say to yourself. Dreams aren't real. They can't hurt me. There's no reason for me to panic. And then, dark locks in: it's NIGHTFALL.
Now, you scream…
Welcome to THE NIGHTFALL PROJECT, a website dedicated to honoring one of the most unusual radio shows of all time.
On these pages you will find public information, behind-the-scenes stories, anecdotes, recollections and other details I have accumulated over the past nearly 10 years that I have been researching this wonderful series. Much of the information comes from historical documents, but also through phone and in-person interviews with cast, writers, producers and others involved in the production of the series.
Over time I will also be compiling an Episode Guide for all 100 programs of NIGHTFALL. Between 2003 and 2006, I assembled a database containing complete cast and crew listings, as well as other details concerning the various releases and rebroadcasts over the years. Anyone with skills involving WordPress and MySQL databases can contact me here.
In addition, I will be posting links to episodes of the series. These low-resolution recordings are no substitute for the real thing! As someone who has heard pristine copies of some of these shows, I can tell you that in gaining the benefit of the small file size of 32 or 64 kbps MP3s, you lose out on the exceptional production quality that is typical of CBC Radio programs. The only way to rectify this is to get CBC Radio to release NIGHTFALL. It's a difficult process involving payment of royalties to writers actors and musicians, as well as licensing fees to record companies in some instances. Nevertheless, I will be encouraging folks who stop by here to drop the CBC a note expressing their interest in seeing the show released. If enough people say they are willing to pay a reasonable price for each episode, it would go a long way toward making it happen.
Please enjoy the site and feel free to comment or ask questions.
Meanwhile, careful…of the edge!
